June 18, 2020
Elizeth Arguelles 鈥20 was interviewed by WGN-TV after the Supreme Court rejected an order to rescind DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Elizeth, a DACA recipient, said the SCOTUS decision is an important win, but there is much more to do.
鈥淎 lot of us were worried and expecting the worse,鈥 Elizeth said. 鈥淪o when I received the news. I was surprised, shocked but it was like a sense of relief.鈥
Elizeth came to the U.S. with her family at the age of 8. Now 25, she paid her way through college by working side jobs and selling tamales in Little Village with her mom. Elizeth is the Director of Business Development for Tamles La Leona, her mom's tamale business.
鈥淢y mom always says I鈥檓 the light of her life. She has all her hopes in me,鈥 she said. 鈥淪he came to this country to give us better opportunities.鈥
Elizeth is an advocate for social responsibility and is involved with Increase the Peace, an organization that develops young community leaders and promotes peace in Chicago. Increase the Peace was founded by fellow Dominican graduate Berto Aguayo '16.
